urban hieroglyphs

This series of images is the beginning of a larger project mapping my family history in New York City dating back to 1913. The project started with an aesthetic attraction for the painterly qualities of the hieroglyphic language of engineers, patchwork repairs of construction crews and random droppings embedded on the sidewalks of NYC.

My intention is to create a visual map of my life and ancestral history in New York City expressed in metaphor, symbology, and language by combining imagery, textiles, hand made objects, family ephemera, family film archives dating back to 1925, and film/video that I am shooting.
